Slice of life is an anime genre that focuses on characters living their everyday life. It is less flashy than action or adventure series but it does have its own charms. The slice of life genre offers a chance to relax and enjoy other humans as they go about their daily activities and try to overcome the ordinary struggles of complex modern life. Slice of life is a laidback genre that portrays rather mundane challenges, happy moments, and the overall lifestyles of the characters.
This genre does not appeal to everyone. This isn’t surprising as there is a lack of intense action sequences, long-running drama, monsters, powerfully magical characters, or even a deep plot.
Let’s look at a few of the best anime from this genre.
Clannad premiered in 2007. A total of two seasons were produced and ended in 2009. Clannad is quite successful. It went from a light novel to a manga, getting an anime adaptation and also, an anime film.
The series focuses on Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa. Okazaki is a boy who believes he will never amount to anything in life. Thus, he loses purpose in life until he meets the physically weak Nagisa.
The romantic side of this anime is portrayed brilliantly. Okazaki decides to help Nagisa and her four friends revive the school’s drama club. He finds renewed purpose and this is where Clannad excels– transforming into a deep, thoughtful series overflowing with emotional baggage.
4. YOUR LIE IN APRIL
Your Lie in April is a gorgeous masterpiece and this series fuses various elements to bring forth the perfect anime. Garnished with musicals, drama, and romance, Your Lie in April might just be the anime you’ve been waiting for.
The 22-episode series ran from October 2014 to March 2015. It focuses on the music prodigy, Kosei Arima, and an emotional incident that renders him unable to hear the sound of his own piano.
Then, he meets the free-spirited violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who brings music back to him and changes his view on how music should be played. Your Lie in April is a highly emotional ride with heartbreaks like no other.
This 2009 anime series has stunning animation and a lot of cute girls…these qualities put it up there with the best slice of life.
K-ON chooses characters over plot, focusing on Yui Hirasawa, who refuses to be stopped by her inability to play instruments. She joins the music club and what follows is cute girls doing cute girl things.
Produced by Kyoto Animation, K-On is very relaxing and easy-going. It is the dream slice of life anime for a fan of the genre.
2. ANOHANA: THE FLOWER WE SAW THAT DAY
Anohana: the flower we saw that day is the perfect anime for anyone seeking a measure of closure from a loss. Jinta Yadomi loses a friend and drifts apart from other friends, leading a reclusive life. However, this all changes when the ghost of his childhood friend, Menma, appears to him.
Menma’s ghost asks Jinta for a favor and he has to get their old band together to solve this mystery. This 11-episode ride deals with raw human feelings long hidden away. It is a must-watch.
At the top of our list is Toradora, a 25-episode slice of life anime that ran from October 2008 to March 2009. This was produced by J.C.Staff.
Toradora is an intense romantic series. Episodes are filled with a rollercoaster of emotions and fully fleshed out characters with interconnected backstories.
The series focuses on Ryuji and Taiga. They have different personalities but one thing in common. They both have a crush on the other’s best friend.
