Two lead characters, Hori san and Miyamura kun, finds out about each other’s secret lives outside of school. Hori san is super popular at school but comes home to a life where housework is priority, whereas Miyamura kun is completely isolated from his classmates and reveals a rebellious and mysterious side outside school. The story follows a heart warming and refreshing unfolding of events where two contrasting personalities come together upon a coincidental meeting.
Here are the 5 Reasons why you should Watch it Already!
Breaking Gender Norms and Stereotypes
The anime illustrates a gentleness from the shy and reserved male lead, Miyamura kun, and a contrasting loud and boisterous female lead, Hori san.I think this anime does a good job in passing a message to the viewers saying, regardless of your characteristics, someone in this world will definitely find you either attractive or admiring. Therefore, there is absolute no reason for you to attempt to be like someone else to find friendship or even a romantic relationship. The anime also normalizes the healthy dance between femininity and masculinity, where characters come to learn and embrace all sides of each other.
Exquisite Artistic Visuals
The animators have done an artful job showing subtleties of a relational connection, a bond forming, from acquaintances to lovers. It curates one of the most innovative forms of storytelling, offering an actual visual representation of vulnerability happening! Be it someone shutting down after receiving a response, or touching feeling through a confession. Never have I ever seen this done in romance or friendship themed anime, this is anime definitely shows off a technique worth exploring in character relational development.
It Gets to the Point, all the Juicy Part
The tempo of this love story is simply unlike the rest, mainly because the focus of this series is about what happens after the confession between lovers.
Most romance anime have the confessional arc happen all the way at the end of the series, however, you will be surprised to find the progression of of this intentionally fast paced romantic development, making it all the more intriguing learning about the multi-faceted characters.
Sincere and Wholesome
Horimiya shows all the different aspects of a romantic relationship. Usually most romance anime takes the family portion out of the picture, because the confessional arc is all the way at the end, thus the focus is mainly on the lead characters. However, in Horimiya, the story manages to pull core character development through family dynamic and familial perceptions of their growing relationship. It pulls into perspective how each and everyone one of our new relationships can immediately affect our every other existing relationships.
Modern take on Romance
Everything that is is left out in a typical boy meets girls anime or the other way around can be found so artfully showcased in the plot progression. You will come to care a lot more about the supporting characters who are constantly trying to adapt to the new atmosphere of new bonds forming. It is a refreshing take on friendship and romantic relationships, and all of the pulling-heart-strings-subtleties in between.
This anime is a must watch for people who love romance, slice of life, visual arts and delicate screenwriting; more importantly, because it is a well-rounded anime that addresses gender stereotype and a nod to suicide awareness that no other romcom anime has ever attempted before in a short 13 episodes series so completely.
I hope you find this helpful in helping you decide on whether or not to watch this anime. It is now streaming on Funimation and Hulu. Enjoy! ╭(♡･ㅂ･)و ̑̑
