My Top Anime Picks for Summer 2021

Summer is here and, with it, a brand-new season of anime and more reasons to stay inside away from the sun.

Summer 2021 should be called the “Summer of Sequels” because a lot of the high-profile series this time around are follow-ups to popular series, but there are still some really good originals on the horizon.

7. NIGHT HEAD 2041

Starting the list is NIGHT HEAD 2041, a psychological thriller set in the year 2041. The show is about the Kirihara brothers running from government forces for having psychic powers.

Chasing them are the Kuroki brothers, at the behest of government forces. Judging from the trailer, I expect a high-octane series with badass moments and action that keeps me at the edge of my seat. I’m looking forward to watching it when it comes out in July!

6. Aquatope of White Sand

Set to air on July 9, Aquatope of the White Sand is the slice-of-life series I’m looking forward to the most. It’s about 18-year-old Kukuru working at an aquarium when one day, she meets a runaway idol, Fuuka Miyazawa. From this chance meeting, the girls begin to question their lot in life and grow as people.

The preview showcases gorgeous animation, a beautiful background, and the melancholy vibe that the show will be going for.

5. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “Season 2: Part 2”

After being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the second part of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “Season 2” is finally here. We’re continuing right where we left off, with Rimuru and company still contending with Clayman as the various nations are coming under one banner.

For a comedy series, things are getting pretty intense. “Part 2” premieres on July 6.

4. The Detective is Already Dead

Kimizuka Kimihiko has a knack for getting into trouble, from witnessing drug deals to getting himself involved with an international detective called Siesta. From there, Kimihiko goes on wild adventures to stop criminal organizations and save people from natural disasters.

But suddenly, his partner Siesta mysteriously dies and Kimihiko embarks on a new journey to solve the mystery of her death alongside a girl who bears an uncanny resemblance to the detective.

3. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S

After many delays, the second season of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid comes roaring back on July 7. The peaceful life of Miss Kobayashi and the dragon maids are thrown for a loop when a new maid descends on the scene.

The ‘S’ stands for ‘Super and Supreme Second Life is Starting’ and by the sound of it, Kyoto Animation is going all out to make up for the lost time.

2. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! “Season 2”

My Next Life as a Villainess was one of my favorite series in 2020, and I’m ecstatic that a second season is coming out. Now that Catarina “won” the game, the sky’s the limit in regards to what new adventures our lovable idiot will find herself in.

The “Season 2” trailer shows off new rivals, friends getting together, and apparently, she fights a dragon. Whatever the case, I’m looking forward to ‘Bakarina’s’ new adventures.

1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu

Higurashi Gou was one of my favorite shows during 2020. I couldn’t predict the twist and turns that the anime took; the show was insane.

Sotsu is the follow-up and looks like it’ll add more insanity. “Season 1” is fresh on my mind and I have no idea what to expect. My mind is racing with theories and I think they’re all wrong.
