Guy in Joker Costume Goes on Stabbing Spree in Tokyo Train

A Japanese man dressed up as the Joker went on a stabbing spree in this insane incident that occurred in Tokyo.
The attack happened on Halloween when the man stabbed multiple people on a Tokyo commuter train before starting a fire and injuring other people. This sent people scrambling out of the train’s windows to escape the fire inside the train.
Tokyo Attack
According to the Tokyo Police Department, the attacker, who was later identified as 24-year-old Kyota Hattori, injured 17 people with three taking serious injuries. Fortunately, most of the injuries weren’t serious and not everyone was stabbed, but I’m sure it was a frightening experience.

As seen in the video, the attacker was wearing a bright green and purple suit so one immediately thinks he was likely dressed up as the Joker for Halloween although he didn’t have the clown makeup the character normally has.
I’ve seen some people on the Internet speculate that the attacker is cosplaying as Yoshikage Kira from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure since he and the character are dressed similarly. It’s difficult to say what Hattori’s intention of dressing up that way was.
Calm and Creepy
The attack started a little bit before 8 pm with Hattori riding an express train to Shinjuku station when he suddenly took out a knife and stabbed a seated man in his 70s right in the chest. Reports state that he went on to stab 10 more people before dousing the interior of the train with some kind of liquid and setting it on fire.

A female passenger said that he showed no emotions as he was stabbing people and dousing the train. It wasn’t long after that the cops showed up and arrested him on attempted murder, among other charges. Apparently, he didn’t put up much of a fight and cooperated with the cops.
Strange Motive
According to the Tokyo police, Hattori told authorities that he wanted to kill people and get the death penalty. Japan is one of the few countries in the world to have the penalty with the last one carried out in 2019.
The investigation is still ongoing so it’s unknown what Hattori meant by all this. Some believe this was some strange way to commit suicide or the result of mental health problems. Unfortunately, the passenger in his 70s is in critical condition.
Past Attacks
Tragically, this is the second knife attack on a Tokyo train in the past three months. On August 6, 2021, the day before the Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony, 36-year-old Yusuke Tsushima went on a stabbing rampage where he injured nine people. He even had plans to bomb the famous Shibuya Crossing. His motive was due to alleged rejections by women and the jealousy he felt towards couples.

If you go back a little further, knife attacks have seen an increase within the past few years. In 2019, a man attacked a group of schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop.
I don’t know what’s going on in Japan but I pray these attacks stop, immediately. And I hope that all of the people injured in this recent attack make a speedy and full recovery.
